Best Web Development Companies in the UK (2026): 10 Agencies Reviewed

The UK has one of Europe’s deepest pools of e-commerce and CMS agencies, and English is the working language by default. This ranking is written for a company from the US, the EU or the Nordics that wants to hire web development companies in the UK for a Shopify Plus or Adobe Commerce store, an enterprise WordPress platform or a Drupal site. I kept 10 agencies and checked them on Companies House, the UK’s public company register.

Web development companies in the UK at a glance

If you only have a minute, these are the web development companies in the UK I would shortlist as a foreign buyer, in the order I would contact them. Each is reviewed below, with its Companies House data on its company profile where I could confirm it.

  1. Human Made – Enterprise WordPress and WordPress VIP specialist.
  2. Space 48 – Platform-agnostic e-commerce agency for Adobe Commerce, Shopify Plus and BigCommerce.
  3. Zoocha – UK Drupal specialist with an unusually long ISO list.
  4. GENE Commerce – Adobe Commerce and Magento-only specialist, Adobe Gold partner.
  5. Swanky – Shopify Platinum Partner focused on Shopify Plus replatforming and growth.
  6. Charle – London Shopify Plus agency with its own growth platform.
  7. INDEZ – Long-established Scottish Magento and multi-platform e-commerce agency.
  8. magic42 – Retailer-born Magento, Adobe Commerce and Shopify agency for B2B.
  9. Underwaterpistol – Soho Shopify Plus agency for conversion and retention.
  10. Rawnet – B2B tech-brand websites on modern and headless stacks.

How I ranked the web development companies in the UK

I ranked the web development companies in the UK by quality first, fit for a foreign client second and price third:

  • Partner tiers – the highest official status with a platform, such as Shopify Platinum, Adobe Gold, WordPress VIP Premier or Top Tier Drupal partner.
  • Platform focus – a clear specialism beats a long list of logos, so I noted what each agency builds on and what it does not.
  • Reviews – Clutch ratings where they exist. Only four of the ten have Clutch reviews, so where there are no usable reviews I say so and name the strongest other signal.
  • Track record – named clients and years on the market.
  • Registration and ownership – I checked each company on Companies House and disclose who owns it, including private-equity backing.

The list includes only UK-incorporated, UK-headquartered firms and excludes UK offices of foreign networks and agencies that now belong to foreign groups. That is why We Make Websites (owned by the Indian Tech Mahindra) and Big Bite (acquired by the US company WP Engine in January 2026) are not here. I also left out Eastside Co, whose trading company went into voluntary liquidation in August 2026. Team sizes are the Clutch bands or published figures, and the rates and minimum project sizes are the ranges listed on Clutch.

The 10 best web development companies in the UK, reviewed

Every web development company in the UK below gets the same treatment: who they are, what clients say, the facts that matter when you hire, and my opinion on who should – and should not – work with them.

1. Human Made

Enterprise WordPress and WordPress VIP specialist

Human Made is an enterprise WordPress agency that has built content platforms for global brands since 2011. It is fully remote: the company is incorporated in the UK and has its registered office in Matlock, Derbyshire, but there is no central office, and the three founders who own it live in Switzerland, France and Canada. It handles WordPress development, migrations, audits, retainers and staff augmentation for enterprises, publishers, universities, financial services and tech companies. It is a WordPress VIP Premier Agency Partner, also works with Altis, Pantheon and Kinsta, and WordPress co-founder Mike Little works there.

What clients say. Clutch: 4.7/5 from 19 reviews. It has the most reviews in this ranking, from clients in the UK, the US, Australia and China, who praise the collaboration, responsiveness and engineering quality; some ask for more upfront scoping, and cost is its lowest-rated category. Named clients include Standard Chartered, the Harvard Gazette, Capgemini, Siemens, Skyscanner and TechCrunch.

Facts: founded 2010 · Matlock (fully remote) · 50–249 people · $150–199/h · minimum project $50,000 · English.

My take: the strongest review record on this list and my first call for a large WordPress or WordPress VIP platform – just do not expect a UK office to visit. Best for: publishers and enterprises running large or multisite WordPress and WordPress VIP platforms. Not for: small brochure sites or e-commerce-first projects.

2. Space 48

Platform-agnostic e-commerce agency for Adobe Commerce, Shopify Plus and BigCommerce

Space 48 is a remote-first e-commerce agency headquartered in Manchester, with a separate engineering squad for each of Adobe Commerce (Magento), Shopify Plus and BigCommerce, where it is a Certified Partner. It covers platform engineering, migrations, integrations, hosting and maintenance, CX design, strategy and performance marketing for retailers, and in 2022 it acquired the York Shopify Plus specialist Brave the Skies. It is private-equity backed: Foresight invested in 2021, and founder Jonathan Woodall is still involved.

What clients say. Clutch: 4.0/5 from 1 reviews. One review is too few to generalise from (a headless Shopify build for a London DTC brand, which reported a 10% rise in subscription order value). Named clients such as Charlotte Tilbury, Sarah Raven, Menkind, Richer Sounds and Ordnance Survey are the stronger signal.

Facts: founded 2008 · Manchester · 100+ people · $300+/h · minimum project $250,000 · English.

My take: the biggest e-commerce team here and the one I would brief if you are replatforming and have not settled between Adobe Commerce and Shopify Plus – but only with an enterprise budget. Best for: mid-market and enterprise retailers replatforming or running Adobe Commerce or Shopify Plus who need senior engineering and long-term support. Not for: small stores and budgets under about $250,000.

3. Zoocha

UK Drupal specialist with an unusually long ISO list

Zoocha is a Drupal and digital-experience agency from Hertford offering strategy, UX, design, development, hosting and support, with further teams in València and Brazil according to Clutch. It describes itself as the top-ranked Drupal agency in the UK and announced Top Tier Drupal Partner status in 2026. It holds ISO 9001, 14001, 22301, 27001, 20000, 27701 and 42001. It is held through a holding company, Zoocha Group Limited, and its co-founders Will Huggins and David Pratt are the directors.

What clients say. Clutch: 4.9/5 from 6 reviews. Reviewers from England and Barcelona praise on-time delivery, Jira and Scrum project management, back-end strength and long support relationships; weaker points mentioned are visual design, slower turnaround on low-priority tickets and one cost overrun. Clients such as Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, the FCA, Ofsted, Oxfam and UCL show the public-sector depth.

Facts: founded 2009 · Hertford · 50–249 people · $100–149/h · minimum project $50,000 · English.

My take: the safest choice for a secure Drupal build or long support contract, especially if your procurement team asks for ISO certificates. Best for: public sector, higher education, healthcare and charities that need a secure Drupal build or long-term support. Not for: design-led brand sites or e-commerce.

4. GENE Commerce

Adobe Commerce and Magento-only specialist, Adobe Gold partner

GENE is a Brighton e-commerce agency that works only on Adobe Commerce and Magento: platform management, evolution and transformation projects, plus checkout and payment engineering. It is an Adobe Gold Solution Partner, says it is the UK’s only Magento Association Platinum Member, works with Hyvä and builds the official PayPal and Braintree modules for Adobe Commerce. It holds ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 and is founder-owned.

What clients say. I found no usable reviews: its Clutch profile has none. The strongest signal is its work on the official PayPal and Braintree modules for Adobe Commerce, along with clients such as Krispy Kreme, Tommee Tippee, Hornby Hobbies and OKA.

Facts: founded 2011 · Brighton · 50–249 people · $100–149/h · minimum project $100,000 · English.

My take: the deepest Adobe Commerce bench in this ranking – hire it when you have already decided to stay on Magento. Best for: merchants committed to Adobe Commerce or Magento who need deep platform, Hyvä or payments expertise. Not for: brands that want Shopify or a platform-agnostic recommendation.

5. Swanky

Shopify Platinum Partner focused on Shopify Plus replatforming and growth

Swanky is an Exeter Shopify Plus agency and Shopify Platinum Partner, and in 2016 it was one of Shopify’s first Plus partners in EMEA. It moves brands to Shopify Plus and then supports their growth with CRO, subscriptions, internationalisation, integrations, POS and marketing, and it also lists operations in Australia and France. Since April 2026 it has been private-equity backed, after a buyout investment by YFM Equity Partners.

What clients say. I could not load its Clutch profile and found no usable reviews. Its Shopify Platinum status and clients such as HelloFresh, Wilkinson Sword, the Eden Project, YuMOVE and Loop Earplugs are the strongest signal.

Facts: Exeter · about 70 people · English.

My take: my Shopify Plus pick for brands that sell in several countries and want one team for the build and the growth work afterwards. Best for: DTC and retail brands moving to Shopify Plus, including multi-region stores. Not for: Adobe Commerce or custom-platform projects.

6. Charle

London Shopify Plus agency with its own growth platform

Charle is a London Shopify and Shopify Plus agency that designs, builds, migrates, supports and grows stores, with SEO, email and SMS and CRO delivered through its own CSignal platform. It says it holds Shopify Plus-level accreditation, and it is owned by its founder.

What clients say. Clutch: 4.9/5 from 4 reviews. Reviewers from London, Bristol and Yeovil call the team communicative and knowledgeable and report sales gains (one +30% in B2C orders, another doubled sales); one delay was caused by a developer leaving. Clients include Cambridge Satchel, 111SKIN, Beauty Bay, Muc-Off and the RNLI.

Facts: founded 2018 · London · 10–49 people · $100–149/h · English.

My take: a good fit if you want your Shopify store and its marketing run by the same small London team. Best for: DTC brands selling in the UK that want a Shopify build plus ongoing growth marketing from one team. Not for: complex B2B or non-Shopify platforms.

7. INDEZ

Long-established Scottish Magento and multi-platform e-commerce agency

INDEZ is a Glasgow e-commerce agency, established in 1996, that builds on Magento and Adobe Commerce (B2B and B2C), Shopify Plus, BigCommerce and Webflow. It also offers performance marketing, e-commerce SEO, Amazon, ERP and marketplace integrations, OpenMage and Magento support, and rescues of failing projects. It is a Google Premier Partner and a Klaviyo Master Silver Partner, and it is owned by its two directors.

What clients say. I found no usable reviews: its Clutch profile has none. Thirty years on the market and clients such as Chisholm Hunter, Demijohn and Powertool World are the strongest signal.

Facts: founded 1996 · Glasgow · 10–49 people · $150–199/h · minimum project $25,000 · English.

My take: a small, experienced team I would call to rescue or take over an existing Magento store, especially a B2B one. Best for: SME and mid-market merchants, often B2B, on Magento who need integration, support or project rescue. Not for: enterprise brands that need large design teams.

8. magic42

Retailer-born Magento, Adobe Commerce and Shopify agency for B2B

magic42 is a Birmingham e-commerce development agency formed in 2018 by the team behind an online retailer founded in 2000. It works on Magento Open Source, Adobe Commerce, Shopify and Shopify Plus, and handles replatforming, B2B e-commerce (PunchOut and ERP integrations), Hyvä themes as a Hyvä Silver Partner, and Magento audits.

What clients say. I found no usable reviews and no Clutch rating. Its Hyvä Silver Partner status and clients such as Flying Spares, Stone Group, Alan Paine and British Gymnastics are the strongest signal.

Facts: founded 2018 · Birmingham · about 20 people · minimum project $1,000 · English.

My take: the practical, lower-cost option for a B2B Magento store, run by people who have sold online themselves. Best for: B2B and mid-size merchants on Magento who want practical, retailer-minded development at moderate cost. Not for: global enterprise programmes.

9. Underwaterpistol

Soho Shopify Plus agency for conversion and retention

Underwaterpistol is a Shopify Plus agency trading from Soho in London (its company is registered in Northern Ireland, with a Belfast registered office). It covers UX, design, development, migration, CRO, SEO, subscriptions, loyalty and tech-stack consulting. Its featured work includes Ooni and the Yimbly multi-vendor marketplace for Reach plc, built on a Mirakl–Shopify integration. It is owned by Gary and Nicola Carruthers.

What clients say. I found no usable reviews: its Clutch profile has none, and it does not state its Shopify partner tier. The Yimbly marketplace for Reach plc is the strongest reference.

Facts: founded 2012 · London · 10–49 people · English.

My take: worth a call for a Shopify Plus marketplace or a store that needs a small senior team rather than a big agency. Best for: DTC brands and marketplaces on Shopify Plus that want a small senior team. Not for: Adobe Commerce or enterprise programmes that need large teams.

10. Rawnet

B2B tech-brand websites on modern and headless stacks

Rawnet is a Berkshire digital agency for technology brands, offering websites and e-commerce, digital marketing and brand strategy. Its stack per Clutch is Laravel, React, Symfony, React Native and Node, and its technology partners include HubSpot, Bloomreach and the headless CMS Sanity. It holds ISO 9001 and ISO 27001.

What clients say. I found no usable reviews: its Clutch profile has none. Clients such as Softcat, Whistl, Bottomline, NVIDIA and OutSystems are the strongest signal.

Facts: founded 2002 · Bracknell · 10–49 people · $150–199/h · minimum project $25,000 · English.

My take: the one option here for a B2B tech website on a custom or headless stack rather than a commerce platform. Best for: B2B SaaS and technology companies that need a lead-generating website on a headless or custom stack. Not for: retail e-commerce on Shopify Plus or Magento.

Quality, specialisation and what web development companies in the UK charge

The web development companies in the UK on this list that publish rates on Clutch sit between $100–149 and $150–199 an hour, with Space 48 at $300+ and a minimum project of $250,000. Clutch shows these figures in USD, but expect UK agencies to quote in GBP, so agree the currency and who carries the exchange-rate risk before you sign. UK rates are well above Central European ones – compare the same list for Poland, where rates are lower – but quality and fit come first: a cheap build on the wrong platform costs more the first time you change it.

The main choice is between e-commerce specialists – Space 48 across platforms, GENE, INDEZ and magic42 on Adobe Commerce and Magento, Swanky, Charle and Underwaterpistol on Shopify Plus – and CMS specialists: Human Made for WordPress, Zoocha for Drupal and Rawnet for headless B2B sites.

How to choose a web development company in the UK

Choosing a web development company in the UK starts with the platform, because most good UK agencies specialise:

  • Shopify Plus – Swanky for multi-region brands, Charle if you want marketing from the same team, Underwaterpistol for marketplaces.
  • Adobe Commerce and Magento – GENE for depth, INDEZ or magic42 for B2B and smaller budgets, Space 48 if you might also consider Shopify Plus.
  • WordPress – Human Made at enterprise and WordPress VIP scale.
  • Drupal – Zoocha, especially for public-sector and regulated clients.
  • Headless or custom – Rawnet for B2B technology brands.

Three practical points for foreign buyers. VAT: since Brexit, a UK agency normally invoices B2B services to a business outside the UK without UK VAT; in the EU you account for VAT at home under the reverse charge, so ask your accountant how it applies to you. Time zone: GMT/BST overlaps US East Coast mornings and the whole EU working day, so meetings are easy from New York, Berlin or Stockholm. Due diligence: look the company up on Companies House – it is free and shows the status, directors, owners and filed accounts – and check whether the agency has recently changed hands.

Web development companies in the UK: FAQ

The questions foreign companies ask most before hiring web development companies in the UK.

Do web development companies in the UK charge VAT to foreign clients?

No, web development companies in the UK normally do not charge UK VAT on B2B services supplied to businesses outside the UK. EU buyers usually account for VAT at home under the reverse charge; consumers and some special services follow different rules, so confirm with your accountant.

Which web development company in the UK is best for Shopify Plus?

The best web development company in the UK for Shopify Plus is, in my opinion, Swanky, a Shopify Platinum Partner that also handles multi-region stores. Charle and Underwaterpistol are smaller alternatives.

Can I check web development companies in the UK on Companies House?

Yes, you can check web development companies in the UK for free on Companies House, which shows each company’s status, directors, people with significant control and filed accounts. Small companies file abridged accounts, so turnover is often not shown.

How much do web development companies in the UK charge?

Web development companies in the UK on this list charge between $100 and $199 an hour where they publish a Clutch range, and Space 48 lists $300+ with a $250,000 minimum. Most quote per project in GBP after a discovery phase.

My verdict: which web development company in the UK to hire

Choosing among web development companies in the UK depends on your platform. For enterprise WordPress, hire Human Made. For a large replatforming where Adobe Commerce and Shopify Plus are both on the table, hire Space 48. For Drupal, hire Zoocha. For Adobe Commerce, hire GENE. For Shopify Plus, hire Swanky.

Whichever web development company in the UK you choose, agree the currency, the VAT treatment and who owns the code before the build starts – and check the company on Companies House before you sign.
