Foreign companies hire US software firms for two reasons: to build a product for American customers with people who know that market, and to work with senior engineers in their own time zone once they have a US team. This ranking is written for a company from the EU, the UK, the Nordics or Asia that wants to hire one of the software development companies in the US – for custom software, a mobile app, a product rescue or a regulated health or fintech product. I am Adrian, an SEO consultant in Wrocław, and I research and write every ranking on this site myself. I kept 10 companies, all incorporated and headquartered in the US.
Software development companies in the US at a glance
If you only have a minute, these are the software development companies in the US I would shortlist as a foreign company, in the order I would contact them. Each is reviewed below, with its legal entity data on its company profile.
- Atomic Object – Custom software and mobile app consultancy with in-house US teams.
- thoughtbot – Ruby on Rails and product design consultancy with a London office.
- MojoTech – Senior US product engineering and AI development studio.
- Test Double – Senior engineering consultancy for modernising legacy apps and improving teams.
- SOLTECH – Atlanta custom software, AI and Salesforce consultancy.
- Fueled – Premium mobile app and digital product agency, now also home of 10up’s WordPress practice.
- Sidebench – Digital health product strategy, design and engineering studio.
- Praxent – Fintech-only software and UX development firm.
- Imaginovation – Raleigh web, mobile and AI development firm for mid-market businesses.
- Chop Dawg – MVP and mobile app studio for startups with a large review record.
How I ranked the software development companies in the US
I ranked the software development companies in the US by quality first, fit for a foreign client second and price third:
- Engineering quality – seniority, track record and how reviewers rate the quality of the work.
- Reviews – Clutch ratings and review counts; where the sample is small, I say so.
- Specialisation – health and medical, fintech, mobile apps, legacy modernisation or AI.
- Where the team sits – I favoured firms with in-house US teams. Four firms here list $50–99 an hour, which is low for the US, and I flag each one.
- Registration – every company is incorporated in a US state and headquartered in the US. The entity data on each profile comes from the business-entity record on the company’s Clutch profile, which cites the state register, or from its privacy policy; I did not check the state registers myself.
I left out US offices of foreign IT groups and the many offshore development shops with a US address but their real headquarters and developers abroad – the most common model in this industry. If your budget is tighter, see the same list for Poland, where rates are lower.
The 10 best software development companies in the US, reviewed
Every software development company in the US below gets the same treatment: who they are, what clients say, the facts that matter when you hire, and my opinion on who should – and should not – work with them.
1. Atomic Object
Custom software and mobile app consultancy with in-house US teams
Atomic Object is a custom software and mobile app consultancy founded in 2001 and headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with offices in Ann Arbor, Chicago and Raleigh. It builds with Ruby on Rails, React Native, Node.js and React. Its biggest sectors are medical (65%) and supply chain and logistics (25%), and 40% of its clients are enterprises.
What clients say. Clutch: 4.9/5 from 52 reviews. Reviewers praise communication, timeliness, project management and quality, and call the team transparent and flexible. A few suggest clearer scoping up front to avoid budget overruns.
Facts: founded 2001 · Grand Rapids, Michigan · 50–249 people · $150–199/h · minimum project $25,000 · English.
My take: my first call for medical-device, health or logistics software that has to be built properly by a US team. Best for: medical-device, health and logistics companies that need regulated-grade custom software built by a US-based team. Not for: low-cost staff augmentation.

4. Test Double
Senior engineering consultancy for modernising legacy apps and improving teams
Test Double is a remote-first US software consultancy founded in 2011 and incorporated in Ohio. Clutch lists enterprise app modernisation (30%), AI development, custom software and cloud. It is known for senior Ruby on Rails, React and Node.js engineers who join client teams to improve both the code and the engineering practices. Clutch gives a Delaware mailing address as its headquarters, so the company has no single head office I could confirm.
What clients say. Clutch: 4.8/5 from 6 reviews. Reviewers describe the work as high quality and on schedule; cost is the most common concern. Six reviews is a small sample.
Facts: founded 2011 · Remote-first (Ohio) · 50–249 people · $150–199/h · minimum project $25,000 · English.
My take: the team to bring in when you already have a US product, often on Rails, and need senior engineers to modernise it and upskill your own developers. Its work is split across custom software (25%), AI consulting, development and agents (55% combined), Salesforce and CRM, and mobile apps. Its clients are 50% mid-market and 25% enterprise. What clients say. Clutch: 4.9/5 from 48 reviews. Reviewers praise communication, timeliness, project management and strong design and UX. Some note disruption when project managers changed and early pricing surprises.
Facts: founded 2012 · Los Angeles · 50–249 people · $50–99/h · minimum project $50,000 · English.

Its own description names Nestlé, MetLife and USC as clients; that list is the company’s own. What clients say. Clutch: 4.9/5 from 18 reviews. Reviewers praise communication, responsiveness and a consultative approach. One recurring criticism is that testing phases surfaced issues that should have been caught earlier.

Quality, specialisation and what software development companies in the US charge
Six software development companies in the US in this ranking list $150–199 an hour on Clutch: Atomic Object, thoughtbot, MojoTech, Test Double, SOLTECH and Fueled. Sidebench, Praxent, Imaginovation and Chop Dawg list $50–99, which suggests that part of their delivery may be outside the US – a reason to ask, not a reason to rule them out. Minimum projects range from $1,000 at Chop Dawg to $75,000 at Fueled and $100,000 at MojoTech.
Quality matters more than the rate, because rebuilding badly written software costs more than building it well once. The main split is between senior consultancies such as Atomic Object, thoughtbot, MojoTech and Test Double, sector specialists such as Sidebench (health) and Praxent (fintech), a premium app agency in Fueled, and more affordable firms for SMBs and MVPs such as SOLTECH, Imaginovation and Chop Dawg.
How to choose a software development company in the US
Choosing a software development company in the US from abroad comes down to a few practical checks:
- Ask where the developers sit – get the location of every person on your team in writing. A low US rate often means part of the work is done elsewhere, which may be fine, but you should know.
- Own the code and the IP – the contract should assign all intellectual property to your company on payment and give you access to the repository from day one.
- Check the company in the state register – every US state has a free Secretary of State business search where you can confirm that the legal entity is active. Private US companies publish no accounts; only public companies file financial statements, on SEC EDGAR. Ask for client references instead.
- No VAT, invoices in USD – the US has no VAT, and state sales tax rarely applies to B2B services sold to a company abroad. Expect invoices in US dollars.
- Contract and time zones – contracts are governed by the law of a US state, often New York or Delaware. East Coast firms such as thoughtbot, MojoTech and Chop Dawg overlap the European afternoon by a few hours; thoughtbot’s London office overlaps fully.
