Many of the foreign companies I work with set up a GmbH in Germany before they hire anyone there, and the first local partner they need is not a marketing agency but a Steuerberater. This ranking is written for a company from the US, the UK, the Nordics or Poland that needs one of the accounting firms in Germany to keep its books, run payroll and file annual accounts and tax returns – in English. I checked that every firm is registered in Germany and kept 8.

How I ranked the accounting firms in Germany
I ranked the accounting firms in Germany by quality first, fit second and price third:
- Google reviews – almost no German tax firm collects Clutch reviews, so Google ratings and their number carry the most weight.
- A German firm – every firm is registered in the German commercial or partnership register, with its register number and VAT ID in its Impressum.
- Service for foreign companies – English-speaking advisors and experience with subsidiaries, branches and foreign founders.
- Scope – bookkeeping, payroll, annual accounts, tax returns and, where needed, audit.
- Size and reach – a single-city firm or a network with offices across Germany.
German tax firms rarely publish prices, so price comes into play only when you compare quotes. I left out firms whose Impressum does not show who the contracting company is.
The 8 best accounting firms in Germany, reviewed
Every one of the accounting firms in Germany below gets the same treatment: who they are, what clients say, the facts that matter when you hire, and my opinion on who should – and should not – work with them.
1. ACCONSIS
Tax, accounting, payroll and audit in one Munich firm
ACCONSIS is a Munich firm that combines tax advice, audit, legal advice and management consulting under one roof, with more than 170 experts. Its English website lists services for doing business in Germany and names internationally operating companies as a client group; it also offers accounting and payroll outsourcing.
What clients say. Google: 4.9/5 from 67 reviews. Reviewers rate the team highly, including for smooth communication in English and cross-border advice.
Facts: Munich · 170+ people · German and English.
My take: the best-reviewed of the larger accounting firms in Germany I looked at, and a natural one-stop shop for a foreign-owned company in Bavaria. Best for: foreign-owned SMEs that want bookkeeping, payroll, annual accounts, tax and audit from one firm. Not for: companies that want a nationwide network or a fixed-price online package.

Facts: Berlin · about 50 people · German and English.
My take: transparent pricing and an excellent review record – my pick for a foreign start-up or SME with a GmbH in Berlin. Best for: foreign start-ups and SMEs with a Berlin GmbH that want digital bookkeeping and payroll. Not for: groups that need multi-country reporting from one provider.

What clients say. Google: 3.4/5 from 31 reviews for the Nuremberg headquarters, mixing client and employer feedback, so it says little about service quality.
Facts: Nuremberg · 1,000+ people · German, English and many more.
My take: the most complete inbound service in Germany – the right call for a subsidiary of an international group, less so for a small start-up. Best for: subsidiaries and branches of international groups. Not for: very small GmbHs on a tight budget.

Facts: founded 1949 · Bonn · 250–999 people · German and English.

What clients say. Google: 4.8/5 from 4 reviews – too few reviews to judge, so the network’s reputation is the main proof.

What accounting firms in Germany charge
Accounting firms in Germany usually charge according to the official fee schedule for tax advisors (StBVV) or a fixed monthly fee based on the number of bookings and employees. None of the firms in this ranking publishes a price list except mgp, which offers online fee calculators. Ask for a written fee offer covering bookkeeping, payroll per employee, annual accounts and tax returns.
The big difference is between independent firms such as ACCONSIS, mgp or Taxmain, which suit small and mid-sized companies, and networks such as Rödl & Partner, Baker Tilly or Grant Thornton, which suit subsidiaries that also need an audit and group reporting.
How to hire an accounting firm in Germany
When you hire an accounting firm in Germany, check three things: that the advisors who will handle your company speak English, which accounting software they use (most work with DATEV) and who files your VAT returns and annual accounts with the authorities.
German deadlines are strict: monthly or quarterly VAT returns, monthly payroll reporting and annual accounts that a GmbH must publish. Ask each accounting firm in Germany for a calendar of deadlines for your company in the first year.
